Description:
Even during Ludwig van Beethoven's lifetime, the composer was so revered that contemporaries arranged his music – mostly the well-known instrumental works – for choir. In some cases, he may even have known these arrangements. After Beethoven's death, a veritable wave of arrangements began, reaching its peak in the 1830s. The present work by the composer and conductor Gottlob Benedict Bierey (1772–1840) dates from this period. He arranged the slow movement of the "Piano Sonata No. 5 in C minor" (op. 10 No. 1) for voices and orchestra, underlaying it with the text of the Agnus Dei from the Latin Ordinarium. The piece can be wonderfully combined with Bierey's arrangement of the 1st movement of the "Moonlight Sonata", which he orchestrated and underlaid with the text of the Kyrie from the Latin Ordinarium (Carus 28.009).
