Bach's cantata BWV 26 is part of Bach's 1724/25 choral cantata cycle and was first performed on 19 November 1724. The 13-verse hymn by Michael Franck on which it is based provided Bach and its unknown librettist with a wealth of metaphors and comparisons that illustrate the fleetingness and transience of earthly life from verse to verse, from movement to movement: An impressive musical and poetic display of concise Baroque "vanitas" imagery.
