Description:
Richard Strauss composed "Allerseelen" ("Place the fragrant resedas on the table") in 1885 as a 21-year-old, newly appointed court music director in Meiningen. Today, it is one of his most popular songs. Strauss’s Op. 10, comprising a total of eight settings of texts from the collection "Letzte Blätter" by the Austrian poet Hermann von Gilm, was followed by some 200 more compositions in this genre throughout his prolific song-writing career. The song tells of a past love that ended with the death of one of the lovers. In remembrance of the dead on All Souls’ Day, the memory of the time "as it once was in May" is expressed with particular longing. Strauss wrote the song for solo tenor with piano, but he also performed it himself on several occasions together with his wife, the soprano Pauline de Ahna. Jan-Benjamin Homolka has carefully arranged the song for a five-part chamber choir. The character of the original is preserved, in part because Homolka uses the original piano accompaniment and leaves the original vocal part to the soprano. At the same time, he makes use of the choir’s capabilities to interpret the lyrics within the motivic and harmonic framework established by Strauss. In this way, Homolka realizes the idea of a dialogue between two lovers as an exchange between the female and male voices.
