Just as *Thank You* (EMR 99095)—which was composed specifically to conclude the program of a SATB vocal quartet—was created, *Be My Friend* was composed to open it. The work begins with the alto entering alone; her rhythmic, syncopated singing immediately captures the listener’s attention. The bass joins in, followed by the tenor and finally the soprano, with each new voice gradually enriching the harmonic texture.
