Description:
An der schönen blauen Donau was composed by Strauss (son) in 1866 for the Vienna Men's Choral Society, i.e. originally as a choral work. The premiere was not so successful. As a concert waltz, however, the composition had far more success: after its victorious performance at the World's Fair in Paris (1867), An der schönen blauen Donau achieved world fame. Many musical greats, including Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, and Dimitri Shostakovich, were proven admirers of Strauss, especially of his waltzes.
