Gwyn Parry-Jones' arrangement of the famous Welsh folk-song "Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn" (for Solo Voice and SATB choir) has harp accompaniment for which piano may be substituted. The words were written by the Bard Will Hopkin for the object of his affection, Ann Thomas of Cefn Ydfa, a farm near Maesteg. It appears first in "Ancient National Airs", a collection published by Maria Jane Hopkins in 1837.
The original has three verses of which the first and third appear in this setting of the song. A literal translation by Beti George is given here:
1. I am a foolish young man, living as I fancy, I look after the white wheat, and somebody else harvests it. Why don't you come with me day after day? Because I see you, little girl, becoming more beautiful all the time.
2. You become more beautiful every day, or else my faith is more foolish. For the sake of him who created your beauty, show me mercy now. Lift your head, look over yonder, and give me your tender white hand. For in your shapely bosom is the key to unlock my heart.
3. While the water of the sea is salt, and while my hair still grows, and while there's a heart in my breast, I'll be faithful to you. Tell me the truth, which will remain a secret, and give, under seal, your answers. Is it I, or another one, Ann, that is preferred by your heart?
