Description:
The cantata "Freue dich, erlöste Schar" (BWV 30) by Johann Sebastian Bach is a festive work that Bach created for the Feast of St. John in 1738. It is based on the secular model "Angenehmes Wiederau" (BWV 30a) and is considered one of his latest surviving works in this genre. By reworking it as a sacred cantata, Bach gave the lively music a new, sacred context for the celebration of the birth of John the Baptist.
The work captivates with its glamorous orchestration and the dance-like lightness of the movements, which convey an atmosphere of exuberant joy. The large-scale opening chorus and the virtuoso arias in particular make the cantata a striking example of Bach's ability to combine secular brilliance and spiritual depth.
