The cantata was probably first performed on September 27, 1716, the 16th Sunday after Trinity Sunday, in Weimar's Schlosskirche. The text comes from the cantata volume "Evangelisches Andachts-Opffer" by the Weimar Oberkonsistorial-Sekretär Salomon Franck. The sermon text for the 16th Sunday after Trinity, the resurrection of the young man at Nain (Luke 7.11-14), is only indirectly reflected in Franck's cantata composition. In a common interpretation of this biblical passage at the time, the resurrection of the dead man is seen as a parable for the resurrection of believers.
