Even in 2026, Paul Gerhardt’s texts have lost none of their relevance: Profound, clear, and direct, Gerhardt’s sincere faith—which springs from the depths of his being—is immediately palpable in all its facets, ranging from praise, hope, and comfort to anticipation and joy. Michael Aschauer took the 350th anniversary of the poet’s death as an opportunity to engage intensively with these texts through music. Drawing on the classical-romantic musical language, he has created melodically catchy, newly composed settings that respond to the nuances of the text with a subtly nuanced harmony tailored entirely to the content of the lyrics. Easy to sing, these new a cappella choral pieces (mostly varied stanza songs) are a great addition to church services and spiritual celebrations. Optionally, the piano or organ may be used (colla parte) as accompaniment.
