Description:
De profundis is the result of Christoph Schönherr's intensive study of the last years of Franz Schubert's life and is intended as a "homage" to the great Romantic composer in the subtitle. Musical quotations from Winterreise are juxtaposed with parts of the 130th Psalm set to music. Above all, Der Wegweiser is heard in the orchestra, repeatedly pushing its way into the flow of the composition and questioning the psalm text sung by the choir.
In a concert, for example, the work could be performed together with Schubert's Mass in E flat. This would particularly suit the compositional idea. In addition, the orchestration (with the exception of the trumpets required in the Mass) is identical.
The work is also available in a live recording on CD with the Walddörfer Kantorei and the Ahrensburg Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Christoph Schönherr (Carus 28.105/99).
