Description:
The central theme of the lyrics of this beautiful folk song dates back to the 13th century and Walther von der Vogelweide. The version of the lyrics commonly used today was recorded by Hoffmann von Fallersleben around 1842. The evocative lyrics have lost none of their significance since then, which is why the song continues to be a popular choice for repertoires. It offers performers and arrangers plenty of room for creative interpretation—including Nena, who successfully recorded the song on vinyl in the 1990s.
