Uraufgeführt wurde es am Karfreitag 1826 in Kassel. Zugrunde liegen die theologisch bedeutsamsten Teile der neutestamentlichen Offenbarung des Johannes, dessen Todes- und Ewigkeitsvisionen Spohr in eindringlicher Weise zu musikalischer Geltung bringt.
