Description:
At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig Thomaskantor Johann Sebastian Bach broke away from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782) went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed successful operas for Turin, Milan and Naples. Often overlooked is the exquisite church music production of the Catholic Bach, almost all of which was composed between 1757 and 1760 and had a significant influence on his Italian period. These include large-scale vespers compositions with impressive, symphonic instrumental introductions that sometimes anticipate Mozartian idioms. The immediately captivating Domine ad adjuvandum me (E 14), which seems to be carried by euphoric diligence and radiates an energetic light-heartedness, indeed an almost southern temperament, is intended for the opening of Vespers. The work is published in the proven Stuttgart Urtext after the rediscovered Hamburg autograph.
