Dona Nobis Pacem

Dona Nobis Pacem by Jean-François Michel is a work for eight mixed voices a cappella and is part of a deeply expressive sacred tradition. Based on the simple and light-filled Latin plea "Dona nobis pacem" - Give us peace - the composer develops a rich and nuanced vocal language. The eight voices enter into a finely tuned dialog, with homophonic passages of great tonal purity alternating with artfully crafted polyphonic structures. The work is characterized by a meditative mood in which the expressive tension gradually builds up and finally dissolves into serene calm. Jean-François Michel uses the entire tonal palette of the choir and plays with dynamic contrasts and harmonic density. This intimate and intense piece invites performers and listeners alike to a deep moment of reflection, carried by a sensitive and inspired tonal language.
