Goethe’s gripping ballad »Erlkönig« in a fascinating musical rediscovery: Ludwig van Beethoven left behind a dramatic sketch for this famous text, which was later completed by Reinhold Becker (1842–1924). Renowned Finnish choral composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi (*1963) transformed this material into a powerful setting for six-part mixed choir (SSATBB), published as a choral score by Carus-Verlag. Mäntyjärvi’s masterful arrangement captures the nocturnal drama, the child’s fearful pleas, and the eerie allure of the Erlking with remarkable vocal expressiveness. Combining Beethoven’s classical heritage with contemporary choral sophistication, this work makes a compelling highlight for ambitious concert programs that will captivate singers and audiences alike.
