The focus of Rheinberger's extensive and varied choral music lies in the area of works intended for Catholic services. Perhaps Rheinberger's best-known sacred vocal composition is the six-part motet "Bleib bei uns" op. 69.3, the so-called "Abendlied", which goes back to a study by the composer. Even the opening bars with their shift from F major to A minor and the pleading gesture of the melody provide an example of the subtle compositional possibilities of the young Rheinberger.
