As the title of Michael Ostrzyga's choral work "Flight" suggests, this composition is about flying – and metaphorically about life in general. The piece gets by with just a few words, which were chosen for their sound character. Musical wing beats play a central role, underpinned by the word "winged". In the spherical parts, iridescent overtones provide a floating sonority, while lively coloratura illustrates rapid nosedives.
The choral scene is colorful. This diversity is enriched by numerous contemporary compositions, which fortunately increasingly find their way into concert programs. In addition to works that can be attributed to the avant-garde, there are pieces with folk music influences, and still others move between different styles. The new Bärenreiter series "Contemporary Choral Works" brings together high-quality contemporary choral works. Just as the pieces have a wide stylistic range, the instrumentations are also different – but all a cappella. The technical requirements vary, but even the more demanding compositions are tried and tested and do not pose any extraordinary challenges.
