The Gloria is the 13-year-old Mendelssohn's first major church composition. It was written at the beginning of 1822 as part of his composition lessons with Carl Friedrich Zelter, the director of the Berlin Singakademie, but it was no longer exclusively a work for study purposes, as the young composer could hope that Zelter would have the piece performed. The Singakademie's intensive cultivation of Bach and Handel characterizes the youthful work, which follows on from the multi-part cantata of the Baroque period. The large final fugue, impressive moments such as the "Qui tollis" and lyrical soloist ensembles instead of solo arias testify to Mendelssohn's love of experimentation and talent.
