Description:
The "Agnus Dei" forms the solemn conclusion of the cycle "Gloria Patri" (op. 17), one of the best-known works by Estonian composer Urmas Sisask. Composed in 1988, the cycle comprises 24 sacred songs for mixed choir a cappella, which are based on a "planetary scale" developed by Sisask. This special harmonic basis lends the music an archaic yet timeless aura that is deeply rooted in the spiritual musical language of the Baltic region.
In this 24th movement, a meditative intensity unfolds. Through the use of repetitive structures and a clear, almost minimalist melodic line, Sisask creates a hypnotic effect that invites inner contemplation. The "Agnus Dei" captivates with its simple beauty and its ability to create an enormous spiritual resonance with reduced means, making it an outstanding example of contemporary choral music.
