The cantata "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben" BWV 147 for the Feast of the Visitation of Mary (2 July) in 1723 belongs to a group of three Weimar Advent cantatas which Bach reinterpreted textually in 1723 by adding recitatives not present in the original works and at the same time expanding them to a two-part form (extended before and after the sermon). Both parts are concluded with a chorale, of which the one from BWV 147 has become a real hit: "Jesus bleibet meine Freude". The transmission of the cantata is complex, as Bach apparently ran out of time twice; the Weimar fair copy only contains movement 1 (which was integrated into the Leipzig score) and the Leipzig fair copy from 1723 also breaks off at first and was only completed later (the parts were based on concept manuscripts that have not survived). Thus the version from 1723, on which our edition is based for the first time, still differs in many details from the later fair copy: However, Bach did not transcribe the fair copy version into the parts and probably never heard it / This is the Weimar Advent cantata (BWV2 147a, BWV3 deest) without the famous chorale "Jesus bleibet meine Freude". The better-known Leipzig cantata for the Feast of the Visitation of Mary (BWV 147) that emerged from it appears under the number Carus 31.147/50.
