Das Musical erzählt anhand von Udo Lindenbergs Liedern die Liebesgeschichte zwischen dem jungen deutschen Rock-Star Udo Lindenberg und Jessy, dem 'Mädchen aus Ostberlin', in den 1980er Jahren. Die politische Situation der Teilung Deutschlands, die Bespitzelung durch das Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, die Sehnsucht nach Freiheit und schließlich der ersehnte Fall der Mauer spielen im Musical eine zentrale Rolle. 'Hinterm Horizont' ist eine Hymne an die Liebe und an die Hoffnung, dass letztendlich alles gut wird.
