Description:
This piece was commissioned by Merton College, Oxford for the Merton Choirbook, a collection of choral music composed to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the college in 2014. It is a setting of some verses from Ezekiel 36, which are provided in the Anglican Lectionary for morning praise on the days between Ascension and Pentecost. The piece is set primarily homophonically with voice divisions of up to eight voices. After the opening section of staccato chords and silences, the piece builds to expressive legato. The dynamic contrasts that follow lead to two climaxes before the musical material of the beginning returns, bringing the piece to its conclusion with the resolution of all tension over a sustained pianissimo.
