Description:

  • Genre: Sacred & Church Music, Mass
  • Accompaniment: Organ
This Mass for mixed choir and organ includes, in addition to the Ordinary parts—Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei—a canticle before the Gospel. The Hallelujah verse is taken from John 1:1 and gives the work its title, "In the Beginning Was the Word."

In general, this hymn is well suited for all occasions. However, due to the lectionary for Christmas Day, it is particularly appropriate for the Christmas High Mass. Thus, this work serves well as a festive Christmas Mass.

Congregational participation is possible through a "Hallelujah" taken from the well-known hymn "Praise Be to God on the Highest Throne" by Melchior Vulpius (GL 328). After the Gospel, measures 1–16 and 53–66 could possibly be repeated here to form a musical framework.

A responsorial psalm for choir and congregation that is compatible in both style and instrumentation (Psalm 33:1–6 in conjunction with "GL 401 Praise the Lord, extol His grace and faithfulness") has been published in "Praise the Triune God."
