Description:
Mozart composed the offertory "Inter natos mulierum" K. 72 (74f) in the early summer of 1771. The work is characterized by the richly contrasting chorus as the carrier of the expression, to which the instruments are largely subordinate. A falling fifth motif, which is already used in the extended orchestral playing, creates a refrain-like connection within the work.
The text is taken from the Gospel of Matthew 11:11 and the Gospel of John 1:29. The beginning also returns in the 4th antiphon in II. Vesperis de Nativitate S. Joannis Baptistae, while the final movement is used as a formula of absolution in the Mass literature.
