Jay (German: Eichelhäher) is based on a poem by the British writer Robert Macfarlane. It celebrates the role of this bird as a "forest creator" and reminds us that every living thing—whether feathered or scaly, leafy, thorny, or branched—plays an important role in its ecosystem. The choir mimics the bird’s call and flits through the poem in this short and cheerful song. "Jay" won first prize in the youth choir category at the "females featured" competition, but is equally well suited for adult choirs.
