Description:
"La Source" by Lili Boulanger is an atmospheric composition for mixed choir and piano (or orchestra) that was written in 1912. The work is based on a poem by Leconte de Lisle and describes the awakening of a spring in the forest and the beauty of awakening nature in impressionistic tones. Boulanger uses flowing accompaniment figures and transparent harmonies to musically capture the movement of the water and the play of light. Despite her early death, this piece already demonstrates her masterful ability to subtly interpret text and melodic elegance, making "La Source" a shining example of French vocal music of the early 20th century.
