For his six "Songs and Romances," Op. 93a, from 1883, Brahms compiled various texts: a well-known Rhenish folk song, two folk songs from Serbia, and poems by Achim von Arnim, Friedrich Rückert, and Goethe. Brahms had already arranged the folk song about the "hunchbacked fiddler" in 1864, but this time he did not use the folk melody; instead, he composed his own tune. The third verse, depicting the witches’ dance on Walpurgis Night, sounds almost like a short instrumental piece with its bass fifths. In the following song, "Das Mädchen" (The Girl), in 7/4 time, a soprano solo joins the chorus. The Serbian folk songs "Der Falke" and "Das Mädchen," the austere and melancholic "O süßer Mai" (Achim von Arnim), and "Fahr wohl" (Rückert) all reflect on the transience of life. The collection concludes with "Beherzigung," set to a text from one of Goethe’s Singspiels, for which Brahms chose a strict contrapuntal form featuring a group canon. Experiments in form, rhythm, and motivic development serve as the unifying thread throughout a collection of very diverse compositions. "Fahr wohl" was sung in front of the Musikverein in 1897, after Brahms’s death, as the funeral procession passed the building on its way to the Central Cemetery.
