With a performance duration of around 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concentrated settings of the well-known Marian canticum text, which originally belonged to the vespers liturgy. It was composed in the late summer of 1815 and thus presumably belongs to the series of church music compositions that Schubert created for the Lichtenthal parish church as a teenager. The work requires a large orchestra with strings, woodwinds and brass. The four-part choir is contrasted by four soloists, who form a quartet for the quiet middle section of the work's three parts.
For the Carus edition, Schubert's own manuscript score of his Magnificat, which was considered lost until 1989, was used for the first time since 1888.
