In terms of its total duration of almost 30 minutes, Schubert's Mass in B flat major (D 324), composed in 1815, is significantly longer than the classical "Brevis" masses by Mozart and Haydn, and its large instrumental scoring with strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani even lends it a clearly solo character. Overall, Schubert was probably inspired by the "symphonic mass" of the late Haydn in terms of its formal structure - divided into six large movements, omitting arias for the vocal soloists, who instead face the choir either alone or in a group with short passages - without, however, reaching its temporal extent. A representative, musically appealing work that impresses with its multi-layered, detailed treatment of the text. It is therefore suitable for special occasions and for the high festivals of the church year and can be easily mastered by experienced church choirs.
