The Esterházy dynasty commissioned the most important mass compositions at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries: Joseph Haydn's six great last masses, Beethoven's Mass in C major and the masses by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. The response in the contemporary musical press to the publication of Hummel's first Esterházy mass, the Mass in B flat major from around 1816/17, was exceptionally positive. In addition to the very simple wind parts, which can also be played by the organ, the work makes high demands on the strings and choir (without soloists) to master a variety of expressive effects between pastoral simplicity, warlike trumpet signals and elaborate fugues that is second to none. This edition is the first scholarly-critical edition to offer the work with accompanying performance material in a reliable musical text.
