Schubert's Mass in E flat major is the last of his six settings of the Ordinarium Missae and also his most important work in this genre. The mass is full of varied drama and confessional expression and was declared "liturgically unusable" by some of his contemporaries due to significant textual differences.

For the edition of the "great" Schubert masses, the source material was once again examined in detail and subtly. The results are historical-critical Urtext editions that deviate from previous editions in numerous places: not seriously, but in many significant details, especially the dynamics and articulation (the "pain child" of the Schubert editors). The editions thus provide a historically aware performance practice with a musical text that is as carefully prepared as it is interpretatively attractive.

Thanks to the arrangement for chamber orchestra (arr. J. Linckelmann Carus 40.660/50), it is also possible to perform the work on a smaller scale.
