Mascagni, whose opera "Cavalleria rusticana" made him famous all over the world, wrote the mass at the same time as his famous one-act opera.

It is a work with a simple but effective style and refined lyrical melodies sung by tenor and bass and supported by the choir in the most energetic movements. The famous "Elevazione" with its poignant violin solo makes this mass a true masterpiece. The level of difficulty is moderate and the instrumentation is not too large, making the "Messa di Gloria" equally suitable for professional and amateur ensembles. This extremely beautiful-sounding mass is also easily accessible for youth choirs and orchestras.

The edition by Italian conductor Andreas Gies is based on the composer's autograph. The edition with score, as always with Carus with critical report and informative preface, performance material and piano reduction, presents the work for the first time in modern notation.

Mascagni wrote his "Messa di Gloria" for a three-part choir in which children (ragazzi) and alto voices (contralti) sing one part together, plus a (high) tenor and a bass. For today's mixed choirs, it makes sense to have the high alto voices sing with the mezzo-soprano soprano (Ragazzi e Contralti) and the lower alto voices with the tenor. This makes the work suitable for smaller choirs with a weak tenor. The piano reduction and choral score offer the middle part both in octavated treble clef (tenor) and in normal treble clef (for the alto parts). This means that everyone can sing from their usual clefs.
