Die 'Messe 2012' ist die erste Vertonung des deutschen Messetextes von Michael Schütz. Das halbstündige Werk führt verschiedene Formen und Stile zusammen: Neben vierstimmigen, homophonen Passagen steht eine Fuge im dreifachen Kontrapunkt, Unisono-Rufe des Chores kontrastieren mit polyphonen Rhythmen, Barock, Klassik und Romantik sind eng verwoben mit Jazz, Pop und Rock. Die Besetzung: Gemischter Chor (S, A, T, B), Streichorchester (Vl I, Vl II, Vla, Vc, Kb) und Band (p, g, b, dr).
Der Chor ist der Hauptträger des musikalischen Geschehens, gleichwohl erfahren die begleitenden Klanggruppen u. a. durch Einleitungs- oder solistische Passagen eine besondere Behandlung. Die Außenteile des Stücks, 'Kyrie' und 'Dona nobis pacem', erklingen mit lateinischem Text, was die Rückbindung an das viele Jahrhunderte bestehende Ordinarium unterstreicht.
Von den zahlreichen Textversionen, die in dieser Zeit entstanden und später auch in die deutsche Sprache übersetzt worden sind, hat Michael Schütz die Wortlaute verwandt, die uns heute teilweise auch durch die verschiedenen liturgischen Stücke im Gottesdienst bekannt sind: Im Credo finden wir das Apostolische Glaubensbekenntnis, Sanctus und Benedictus entsprechen dem gesungenen Liedruf der Gemeinde.
Beim Gloria gibt es eine Besonderheit: Während des 'Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe' des Chores singt die Gemeinde parallel dazu 'Nun danket alle Gott' (Text: Martin Rinckart, 1636, Melodie: Johann Crüger, 1647). Dies beantwortet die Frage nach unserer Motivation für einen Lobpreis: '...der uns von Mutterleib und Kindesbeinen an unzählig viel zugut bis hierher hat getan.'
