Description:
The "Messe solennelle de Sainte Cécile", commonly known as the Cäcilienmesse, is one of Charles Gounod's most popular sacred works. First performed in 1855 in the church of St. Eustache in Paris, the work impresses with its radiant splendor of sound, its catchy melody and its large-scale scoring for soloists, choir, orchestra and organ. Dedicated to St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, the mass uniquely combines deep religious seriousness with the operatic drama that is characteristic of Gounod's style. The majestic "Sanctus" with its tenor solo is particularly famous. To this day, the work continues to inspire with its emotional immediacy and solemn atmosphere, making it a milestone in Romantic church music.
