André Campra's Requiem from 1695 is one of the first major settings of the funeral liturgy in France. It was composed during his time as Kapellmeister at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris as a commissioned work in memory of the deceased Archbishop of Paris. The work was so highly regarded that from the end of the 18th century and until 1805, parts of it were regularly performed at funerals or memorial services in the south of France. Campra envisages four sound groups: a five-part Grand Chœur, a two- to three-part Petit Chœur, three vocal soloists and an instrumental group known as a "symphony".
