Description:
Joseph Martin Kraus, who was born in the same year as Mozart and, like the famous Salzburg composer, was highly gifted musically and died far too young, has been receiving more attention again in recent years. And rightly so!
He wrote this Miserere as early as 1773 during his time as a student in Erfurt. It is a remarkable document of the craftsmanship of Kraus, who was only seventeen years old at the time. Even in this early work, Kraus shows himself to be a true representative of the musical "Sturm und Drang". The music is characterized by great seriousness and expressiveness, abruptness and at times also brusqueness, despite its youthful recklessness and unconventional compositional technique.
