The Missa Beatissimae Virginis Mariae was composed around 1758-1760, between the end of Haydn's time as Kapellsänger at St. Stephen's in Vienna and his first appointment as Kapellmeister to the Bishop of Großwardein (in present-day Romania). The four-part choir (choral and solo) and the "church trio" are joined by two trumpets (clarini), timpani and two trombones, which reinforce the vocal alto and tenor parts in the tutti, but are also used obbligato in the "Et incarnatus est". As an early work, the mass is in the festive-baroque stylistic tradition that was the norm of church music practice in southern Germany until the middle of the century; on the other hand, it already shows subjective inspiration, which sets the work apart from many mass settings by contemporaries.
