This Latin *Missa Da pacem, Domine* is based on the 9th-century hymn of the same name. Franz M. Herzog uses it in a variety of ways as a motivic foundation for all parts of the Mass. The Kyrie, with its naturally flowing counterpoint, is reminiscent of the Renaissance, while the rhythmic element predominates in large parts of the Gloria. In the Credo, Herzog combines different levels of expression: in the haunting "Crucifixus," for example, the hammer blows of the crucifixion can be heard before the Credo comes to a powerful conclusion. In the Sanctus, the juxtaposition of female and male voices reflects the angelic choirs of the cherubim and seraphim, before the Agnus Dei ends in a spirit of peace and hope, entirely in keeping with the title of the Mass.

An exciting and rewarding work for dedicated amateur and chamber choirs that impressively conveys the ever-relevant plea for peace and enriches both church services and concert performances.
