The Bohemian Shepherd's Mass from 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba is the most important of the so-called Czech Christmas masses. These are masses in a popularly reinterpreted sense, in which the individual movements are sequences of vocal-instrumental scenes in Czech on the theme of the birth of Christ, which are performed during the Christmas service. The story is told of four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced and who visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is still regarded today as a symbol of Czech Christmas. This critical edition is the first edition of the work in its original form and pitch; it contains a singable German secondary text.
