Description:
Of Dittersdorf's 19 surviving masses, the present work (first edition by Carus) enjoyed particular popularity during the composer's lifetime, including a performance at the imperial coronation of Franz II in Frankfurt Cathedral. The solemn mass, which is aimed at representation, has both choral movements in the traditional contrapuntal church style and solo parts in the modern cantabile style. It also contains a lengthy virtuoso violin solo in the Gloria (Dittersdorf was a professional violinist), which gives the work a concertante character.
