Beethoven repeatedly described the Missa solemnis as his greatest work, which was intended to touch and move people "from the heart". The surviving sources reveal how intensively and for how long Beethoven worked on the composition in order to give the text an adequate expression - in his own words. In terms of its scope and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond the usual liturgical repertoire, and it was not without reason that the premiere took place in a concert hall. The choir plays a structurally essential role in the work and has to master highly demanding parts.

The experienced Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich has published an Urtext edition based on the available sources and reflecting the current state of scholarship.

Thanks to the arrangement for chamber orchestra (arr. J. Linckelmann Carus 40.689/50), it is also possible to perform the work on a smaller scale.
