Description:
Puccini's first known work of church music was composed during his school days at the "Istituto Pacini" in Lucca and was premiered there in 1877; he chose a Latin hymn to the patron saint of Lucca as the text, which was probably composed by him. The work was so popular that a further three performances followed until 1880, when it was also used as an interlude after the Credo of the Messa a 4 voci. It then disappeared completely from musical life and was only rediscovered in the 1990s. As the instrumentation is identical to that of the Messa apart from the solo tenor, which is missing here, a joint performance of the two works is also recommended for this reason.
