Description:
The Christmas anthem "Nazareth" is based on a composition by Charles Gounod entitled "Jésus de Nazareth". The original work, which Gounod composed for solo baritone and orchestra with only a few bars for choir, was enthusiastically received by the audience at its premiere and subsequently became widely known through various adaptations. A version with English text also became established. In contrast to the French original, which refers more generally to the work of Jesus, the focus here is on the Christmas events. The American composer and organist Dudley Buck (1839-1909) adapted this variant into an arrangement for mixed choir with solo baritone and organ accompaniment, which forms the basis of the Carus edition. For the first time, the hymn also has a German sung text: "Kommt her zur Krippe, kommt her, betet an." In his work, Gounod once again proves himself to be a master of beautiful melodies. A hymn-like cantilena floats above simple harmonies in 6/4 time (Andantino), revealing the opera composer's talent.
