Description:
With its onomatopoeic and narrative character, Maurice Ravel's Nicolette is reminiscent of the programmatic chansons of the French Renaissance composer Clément Janequin. The piece, whose text was written by Ravel himself, depicts Nicolette's walk in four contrastingly varied verses and uses musical means to tell of the girl's encounters. The dynamic composition allows the performing choir to bring out musical details to great effect. In Nicolette, Ravel draws a varied and entertaining miniature for a cappella choir with quick brushstrokes in Renaissance colors.
