Description:
The English late Romantic composer Maunder is still prominent in church music today, particularly through his cantatas, above all the Passion cantata "Olivet to Calvary". His Christmas cantata "Bethlehem" is also still very popular in England. While the cantata as a whole is only of limited interest to us here, a single movement from it can also delight and inspire choirs in this country: it is in swaying 6/8 time and is clothed in typical Romantic melody and harmony. The bilingual text emphasizes the importance of the City of David as the place that brought forth the Saviour of the world. The piece is a charming addition to the Christmas repertoire. Can also be sung a cappella, with German and English text.
