Description:
The "Regina coeli" K. 127, composed in Salzburg in May 1772, largely corresponds in expression and formal structure to the first work of the same name, K. 108 (74d), on the same Marian antiphon. In comparison with the first Regina coeli, however, the choral movement shows a more careful contrapuntal development despite the rich orchestral apparatus, which, however, lacks trumpets and timpani. Mozart's study copies of choral works by Michael Haydn and Ernst Eberlin from the spring of 1773 show how incessantly he strove to achieve this.
