Description:
Bach copied his Magnificat in C major and arranged a movement from it, Mozart copied some of his canons - they number in the hundreds: Antonio Caldara (1670-1736) was regarded by his contemporaries and later generations as a master of counterpoint and the stile antico. The Venetian-born composer worked in Vienna from 1712 - alongside Johann Joseph Fux, who called him a composer "of great virtu and capacity".
In liturgical terms, the Regina coeli is one of the four Marian antiphons, namely the Easter antiphons, which conclude the Roman Liturgy of the Hours at the end of Compline. Caldara set the four-part text in four sections: canonically and with retained counterpoints.
