Description:
Inspired by Mozart and Cherubini's Requiem settings, Rheinberger created his first major sacred work in 1865 with the "Requiem" op. 60. Before its premiere in 1870, he reworked it once again and dedicated it to the dead of the Franco-Prussian War. The premiere was a great success, even the poet Paul Heyse reported how the work "gripped him, edified him and swept him away in a higher and higher swelling current of power and beauty". The "Requiem" is characterized by a lyrical, hopeful mood and impresses with its diverse, melodious choral movements, warm instrumentation and artistic polyphony.
