Description:
Garcia, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1767, a priest and bandmaster at the cathedral there, is still little known. His mostly sacred works include four settings of the Mass for the Dead. The present "Missa dos Defunktos" was commissioned by the Portuguese king Dom Joao VI for the funeral of Queen Maria I, who died in 1816. The composition in D minor shows parallels to Mozart's "Requiem" in several places, which Garcia performed for the first time in Brazil two years later (1819).
