Description:
The Requiem in F minor op. 146 is one of Franz Lachner's most important works. The composer, who lived in Vienna for a long time, developed into a "classicist romantic" there, merging classical form, baroque fugue technique and romantic emotion into an unmistakably personal style. The Requiem is an expression of his admiration for Mozart, even if the music is fundamentally different from that of Mozart. In terms of content, it exhibits both conservative traits and extremely progressive characteristics. While a rather introverted mood prevails, the large orchestral scoring unfolds its full effect at some dramatic points. Due to the scale and instrumentation of the composition, the Requiem was not used liturgically. However, it was precisely its performance in a "secular" forum that made the work one of Lachner's best-known works.
